Acupuncture

Veterinary acupuncture incorporates the philosophy and practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that has evolved over 4000 years of observation and practice. Whilst known more in Western cultures for use of fine acupuncture needles on the body, TCM utilizes a holistic approach that includes diet, environmental influences and climate as factors in disease. Treatments for disease can include needles, laser or heating of specific acupuncture points around the body, herbal treatments as well as modifications to diet and environment.

Dr Sam Lowther gained accreditation from the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society in 1995 and has been incorporating acupuncture into his practice since.

Acupuncture can be used to treat:

  • Arthritis – especially in cases non responsive to conventional treatments or where animals are sensitive to anti-inflammatory medications
  • Spinal problems – slipped discs, muscle spasm, partial paresis or nerve damage ( often in conjunction with conventional veterinary treatments or surgery )
  • Heart and other cardiovascular complaints
  • Chronic respiratory or gastrointestinal conditions

Most dogs and cats accept acupuncture with minimal fuss and often are very accepting of repeat treatments, but animals can be sedated for treatment if stressed. Treatments take about 20 minutes and are incorporated into normal consulting hours. Please ring the clinic and arrange an appointment with Dr Lowther to discuss whether acupuncture will help your pet.
